Device Improves Brachytherapy
 
A new device designed to improve the accuracy of brachytherapy treatments won praise at the 2005 annual meeting for the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) in October 2005 in Denver (CO, USA).

Developed by Envisioneering Medical Technologies (St. Louis, MO, USA), TargetScan provides radiation oncologists with a stationary probe and enhanced three-dimensional (3D) imaging acquisition for improved seed-placement accuracy and reduced procedure time.

At the ASTRO meeting, clinicians examined the device intended to address the unmet requirements of radiation oncologists, which include the need for a stationary probe to eliminate prostate movement while obtaining both sagittal and transverse image acquisition and the ability to deliver precise treatments to pre-planned target sites. ASTRO attendees also interacted with radiation oncologists who have clinically tested TargetScan, including Jeff Michalski, M.D., with Washington University School of Medicine in (St. Louis, MO, USA) and Peter Grimm, D.O., of the Seattle Prostate Institute (Washington, USA).
